This is one of my most favorite stories in the Old Testament, I will never forget the time in my life when I really realized that I had been called "For Such A Time As This."<br />
<br />
For Such a Time as This<br />
Lea Sylvester<br />
<br />
I love the Old Testament account of Queen Esther, a beautiful young Jewish woman who put her life on the line to serve God and save her people.<br />
Esther, (Hadassah was her Hebrew name), had been orphaned as a child and raised by her cousin Mordecai. We are told that she was fair and beautiful. Hadassah was also smart and brave. She was elevated from a life of relative obscurity – via rather unique circumstances – to sit atop the throne of the Persian Empire. King Xerxes chose her, from many, as his queen following a royal bridal contest. He was unaware that Esther and Mordecai were Jewish. It is unlikely that he would have chosen Esther had he known. Mordecai was then appointed to a low-level government position.<br />
After Mordecai unearthed a conspiracy to assassinate King Xerxes, he quickly advised Esther. She, in turn, warned the king, giving full credit for the discovery to Mordecai who was richly rewarded for his loyalty. Mordecai told Hadassah (Esther) the following:<br />
“Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews. For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement [help] and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14)<br />
Meanwhile, Haman, Xerxes’ highest-ranking executive─an evil man who hated the Jews, devised a plot to have all the Jewish people killed, including Esther and Mordecai. King Xerxes agreed to the genocidal scheme, still oblivious to Esther’s Jewish heritage.<br />
Once again, Mordecai learned of the conspiracy and urged Esther to reveal her Jewish heritage to Xerxes, saying, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)<br />
Esther called the Jewish people to fasting and prayer and at risk to her own life and limb, devised a clever scheme of her own. She held a banquet for Xerxes and Haman wherein she revealed her Jewish heritage to the king and begged his mercy for herself and the Jewish people.<br />
Xerxes was moved by Esther’s courage and love for her people. He granted her request and became enraged at Haman. He had Haman executed and promoted Mordecai to his post. Xerxes then pledged safety for the Jewish people.<br />
To this day, Esther’s bravery, her faith in God and God’s deliverance of His chosen people is celebrated during the Jewish festival of Purim.<br />
The Bible is rich with stories of brave women who were called to serve God. These stories, like Esther’s, are an inspiration to men, women and children alike. Such stories – such callings – are not exclusive to biblical times.<br />
Women, you—every one of you who both love the Lord and wish to serve Him—are called “for such a time as this.”<br />
Women are deeply concerned about our nation’s self-destructive trajectory. The burning question they ask is “What can I do?” Like us, they wish to preserve our nation’s Judeo-Christian heritage and secure the legacy we are leaving for future generations.<br />
Women, your faith and action are needed now more than ever: Our nation is in imminent danger of self-destruction at the hands of its own under-educated, misinformed, disconnected citizens.<br />
Our enemies around the globe are diligently working to exploit our ignorance and tolerance to bring the United States of America to its knees. It is time for God’s people to take a stand and do something. But to be effective, we must first understand what it is we believe, why we believe it, and what we can do about protecting our faith and our rights.<br />
Indeed, as goes the old adage: “Knowledge is power.”<br />
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children” (Hosea 4:6).<br />
If we love Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and are diligently following the teachings of our Lord and Savior, we shouldn’t lack knowledge. So then, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to say, “My people are blessed because of their knowledge.” Let us never forget that we serve our High Priest, Jesus Christ, the Risen King. He is the promised Messiah and we must walk worthy in the calling He has given us.<br />
Many attacks from the enemy today are directed at the family unit. As women and mothers, we are the “gatekeepers” of the family. Much like Esther, we are being called for such a time as this. Choices we make now affect our family, our children’s future and can help or hinder future generations. Remember the sacrifices of Esther and of other women in God’s Word. Be a strong woman of God, much as described in Proverbs 31. Our allegiance to God and to our families will result in blessings for those who desperately need them. Obedience to our Heavenly Father is not an option at such a time as this.<br />

The truth is that you need to make a positive impact in your own sphere of influence and community. Together, women of faith can help secure our nation for future generations. Because each of you were called “for such a time as this.”<br />

My passion is to raise up this next generation to have a heart for the lost and the hurting of this world; challenging them to live their lives with their hands and hearts wide open with a passion to reach out and "dare to cry", "dare to love" and dare to do all they can with their God given abilities to help others through mission projects both locally and globally. To develop an others focused mindset in contrast to what we see so much of in our culture today that is so self focused......To teach them to love with abandon and that life is really so much more fulfilling when it is lived others focused.</span></b><br /><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> Our weather is beautiful, even though we had some snow and a slight frost a week ago. Living in the mountains at 7000 ft. It's really more like late spring here rather than early summer. But the warm weather is here, finally! Thankfully we usually have long dry falls and are able to enjoy the outdoors for many months to come.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Summer is break time for me from homeschooling and it is my time to emerge myself in God's word. I have a double bible study going.....Beth Moore's "Children of the Day" which is a study of 1st & 2nd Thessalonians </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and I am also doing a Precepts study by Kay Arthur on 2nd Thessalonians. </span><br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This is my second study with Kay Arthur's "Inductive Study Method".</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As you can see from the chart above there is a lot of marking your bible in this method so I bought a special Inductive Study Bible just for this. I like this method a lot. It really causes me to stop and ponder the who's What's When's Where's and Why's of the books of the bible you are studying. (I say it is like "picking the chicken off the bone".) </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I love learning and growing in my knowledge of God's word but</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I have heard it said many times that people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.....</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"> I am embarking on a new path that the Lord is leading me on. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I have been invited by Ann Dunagan of <a href="http://daringdaughter.org/">Daring Daughters</a> ministry to take part in her Leadership Training. It will be training for mentoring young girls in the Lord with a heart for missions and the hurting and lost of this world. </span></div>

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I am truly thankful for my home and the beauty that surrounds me but there are so many things that matter more than a beautiful yard or garden............."Thank you Father for all that You are and all that You have done for me! Thank you Father for continuing to lead my heart and showing me the things (ones) that matter most to you." I know all too well that when my time is done on this earth I will not look back and be filled with pride because I had beautiful flower beds even though I enjoy them very much. It will not matter If I drove a nice car or lived in a big house. What will matter is knowing what I did with what God has blessed me with. How much I loved, how much I cared, how much I gave of my time and resources that God has blessed me with.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I believe that the reason God blesses us with more is not so that we can heap these things upon ourselves but so that we can heap love and compassion on the hurting and the broken of this world. So we will feed the hungry and clothe the poor. So we can send out missionaries and even take mission trips ourselves in order to share God's great love and His beautiful gospel with a lost and dying world..............Lord, here I am, send me!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What a great way to spend my summer time!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Have a blessed summer and may the Lord move in your heart to go and care for the widows and the orphans of the world or even right there in your own town.</span><br />

Portia and Paris went on vacation to San Francisco and the Redwood Forrest with their dad.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> It was the perfect time for my mother to come up and stay with me for a week. I love spending time with my mother and we never seem to run out of things to talk about. We talked about the bible and God's Word, we talked a lot about the details of my brother and fathers passing. We talked about the girls and homeschooling, about all of our family dynamics. We talked about her future plans and her BIG house or at least her house that seems so big as she adjusts to her new life without my dad.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We went to Wal- Mart and she helped me to figure out finishing the afghan</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> that I have been working on. We went to church and it was fun to hear her perspective on what my pastor was preaching on. We sat and watch tv each night as I worked on my afghan and she rolled scans of yarn into balls. We talked about politics and things that are going on in our government and it was wonderful to just sit and have good conversation with a like minded soul.......you know, they say, "the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree". We have so much in common, oh we are very different in how our brains process things but we are very much alike in our values and world views.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is my beautiful mother, Fran. I love her so much! She is truly the matriarch of our family and has been a tremendous stabilizing force in my life. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have always called her the energizer bunny, it is so hard for her to just sit, she has to have a plan and loves to have something to do so while she was here I took advantage of her expert organizational skills and we cleaned out all of the school curriculum and art supplies, sorted out some old books that I no longer wanted and reorganized both the school cabinet and the built in bookshelf. This took us an entire day!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then we spent half of another day cleaning and organizing the garage pantry/food storage. Dealing with all the empty canning jars can be quite a challenge but we put our heads together and managed to get everything into the cabinets. The girls other grandparents gave us several boxes of their old canning jars that they were no longer going to use so I had to make room for those too. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> I discovered that with everything that was going on last fall with my brother and my dad that I really did not get as much canning or reordering of bulk supplies done as I had wanted to. God is so good though, our freezers are full and we have plenty. We still have some squash and pumpkins left from last years garden in cold storage. I cook the pumpkins and feed them to my dogs, they love it!</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JEIO-Sc9PqM/UxP86yEECcI/AAAAAAAABJc/o8r8OtiPAu0/s1600/projects+with+mom+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JEIO-Sc9PqM/UxP86yEECcI/AAAAAAAABJc/o8r8OtiPAu0/s1600/projects+with+mom+002.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
Then we spent the last of our time together getting her ipad and iphone set up in a way that made sense to her. We even learned how to change your apple id and downloaded a few new apps. We had fun learning together. I do soooo love my mother!!!<br />

Many times throughout my life I have found myself in different seasons. Seasons for learning and growing are always enjoyable, I think of Spring. Seasons that seem to go by too quickly but are filled with laughter and exploring new possibilities and I think of Summer. Seasons of long dry deserts or times of deep reflections, I think of Fall. But then there is Winter, it's long and cold and filled with death. It feels pointless. Everything that is beautiful seems to be gone even though it is only hidden for a time beneath the ice and snow. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It is winter now, I have just come through an incredibly painful season in my life. But I know that after Winter comes Spring and God will bring forth new life again. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Let me explain.........my father and my brother had both been battling cancer together. My fathers battle of 20 years with bladder cancer and my brothers battle of two years (that were know) with prostate cancer. Both metastasized to their bones. </span><span style="font-size: large;">My dad passed away just three weeks before my brother, my dad was 76 and my brother was just 56. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Once again I find myself in a season of life where my world has been shaken and I have been "Forever Changed!"</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is my beautiful dad</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGOICjEpxHM/UwA-D8rlIWI/AAAAAAAABHw/sVEG9L_cu90/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GGOICjEpxHM/UwA-D8rlIWI/AAAAAAAABHw/sVEG9L_cu90/s1600/photo.JPG" height="320" width="242" /></a>and this is my brother who was also my friend.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1XiArtpspkI/UwA--U92jhI/AAAAAAAABH4/q7EnIuDSdfk/s1600/Don.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1XiArtpspkI/UwA--U92jhI/AAAAAAAABH4/q7EnIuDSdfk/s1600/Don.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I am blessed in that I homeschool the girls so I was able to pack them up and move in with my mother for three months in order to help her with my dad and to be there for them both, also to put me closer in proximity to my brother so I could spend time loving on him and giving what support I could to his family. I live about an hour away from them both and commuting was just not practical and not a good option. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I have the most wonderful, loving husband who held down the fort while we were gone. I am so grateful for the time I was able to give.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The girls and I have moved back home, we are all caught up on what we were behind on homeschooling and even though it is still Winter, Spring is coming! Praise the Lord!</span><br />

<br />
<br />
I am reading this book to the girls in the mornings as part of our homeschool. What a wonderful story Katie Davis tells about the beautiful children of Uganda and the contrast of beauty, joy and love in comparison to absolute poverty, pain, sickness and even death that she experiences daily and how God has made her so aware of these contrasts that come in the very same moment and even sometimes the very same person. The plight of these children, who so many have lost their parents to HIV/Aids yet their hearts are so full of joy and their faces are filled with smiles. You can follow whats going on with Katie and her kids at <a href="http://www.amizima.org/">http://www.amizima.org</a><br />
<br />
Last year the Lord lead me to another ministry called <a href="http://www.harvestministry.org/">Harvest Ministry</a>, they have a wonderful missions ministry going all over the world and are the founders of the <strong>"Guma Na Yesu"</strong> (keep with Jesus) children's center which is also in Uganda. What an inspiration Jon and Ann Dunagan are to me. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OS1x18kHPMY/UVnbB88iYFI/AAAAAAAABEk/7uhvFRF9rlc/s1600/840motivating_families_jon-ann.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="115" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OS1x18kHPMY/UVnbB88iYFI/AAAAAAAABEk/7uhvFRF9rlc/s320/840motivating_families_jon-ann.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ann also has an outreach ministry called <a href="http://www.daringdaughters.org/">Daring Daughters</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There, she has available to mothers of teen daughters a mentoring e-coarse designed to help mothers (and Grammies) train up our girls in the ways of the Lord and to have a heart of compassion for the broken and needy people of this world. We have signed up and plan to incorporate this into our school curriculum.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn9TPEJXPOo/UVn8Rvn6lhI/AAAAAAAABFE/lfXVy9LpOyA/s1600/dd-square-300x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fn9TPEJXPOo/UVn8Rvn6lhI/AAAAAAAABFE/lfXVy9LpOyA/s1600/dd-square-300x300.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Every morning, as part of our homeschool morning devotions/missions outreach we are praying for the children at the <strong>Guma Na Yesu </strong>and now also for Katie and her kids.....Last year we were able to support, in a small way, Harvest Ministry's orphans and this year we are praying that the Lord will open up doors and finances for us to be even more involved.<br />
<br />
One very special blessing for me as a Grammy and as an educator is to see that the Lord is developing a heart of compassion in the girls for the orphans, the poor, the walking wounded and the unevangelized people of the world. My prayer is that the Lord will help me to instill these values in them, deeply, and not the values that society would put in them, caring more about themselves and whats popular and the newest style or whats "COOL" , shopping at the mall, <em>give me, let me have, have you got</em> mentality..... <br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gEKtPlic-3k/UVnxaeqhasI/AAAAAAAABE0/781gkFDQ154/s1600/happy+bunny+me.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gEKtPlic-3k/UVnxaeqhasI/AAAAAAAABE0/781gkFDQ154/s1600/happy+bunny+me.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Makes me want to scream!!!!<br />
<br />
sorry <br />
<br />
but to teach them what's "COOL" is this....... <br />

<br />
I have to say that I am so thrilled with this project. I love to take old furniture and fix it up and use it for what is was intended to be used for but I really get a kick out of refinishing a piece and re purposing it. <br />
<br />
This TV cabinet used to be popular but most people have gone to the big flat screen TVs and they won't fit in these old cabinets. This make them easy to find and fairly cheap. I bought this one for $125.00 and when I was looking on line or in furniture stores for a new cabinet or looking into having one built they were $1,000.00 and up.<br />
<br />
All I did was sand it down with my palm sander then paint it black and sand it here and there to distress it. (I like that look) Then I varnished it and let it dry.<br />
<br />
My husband removed the inner parts that were for the TV and installed two shelves and a new back. The TV backs have a big hole in them for the old style TVs to stick out. We actually had a big enough piece of Masonite board left over from the cabinet I redone for Portia's closet a couple of years ago. It is just like this one but we installed a clothing bar and painted it a distress yellow/beige. It is very cute and make a really nice piece of furniture for her room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D0vmQhU_BPk/UQ9SxIQd99I/AAAAAAAABBA/dK5BE6TQG3I/s1600/IMG_4550.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D0vmQhU_BPk/UQ9SxIQd99I/AAAAAAAABBA/dK5BE6TQG3I/s320/IMG_4550.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's big and black, I have a lot of black furniture in my house and I love it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mD2MUHbWNj4/UQ9TUaDU9sI/AAAAAAAABBI/mYlb8dwM3g4/s1600/IMG_4553.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mD2MUHbWNj4/UQ9TUaDU9sI/AAAAAAAABBI/mYlb8dwM3g4/s320/IMG_4553.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It gets a little messy inside but as you can see it gives us three deep shelves and three drawers. The best part is that at the end of the day all the folders and binders go into the cabinet and the doors close and everything is out of sight............For us this is really nice because we don't have a class room. We do school at the table in the dinning room or at the table in the family room which is really one big room along with the kitchen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I feel so clever!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We also made Deer Jerky</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My husband has made deer jerky for as long as I can remember something like 25 years. I have never really liked it much. (strong for me) This time I asked if we could do some experimenting with the brine recipe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
His calls for Worcestershire sauce and I never really like the taste of it. He was nice enough to go along although the whole while he is saying his recipe could not be beat.....:o)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The meat is cut into strips and soaked in a brine for 24 hours. Two of the racks we did in one brine and the other two the brine that he has used for so long. I used a mallet and pounded the meat that I was using in my recipe before it went into the brine. Then it is smoked. All we have is a small Lil Chief smoker but it works pretty well. I was thinking that a nice one might make a great Fathers Day gift......My husband smokes beef briskets at Christmas time and it is absolutely the best thing you could ever want to eat! The whole family RAVES, I'm not kidding. Even the kids love it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I_oXAH2lwEw/UQ9XuJYDbsI/AAAAAAAABBs/G32kWWhUILU/s1600/IMG_4545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-I_oXAH2lwEw/UQ9XuJYDbsI/AAAAAAAABBs/G32kWWhUILU/s320/IMG_4545.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is Tia, she is my new dog that I got last year......she is really hoping that she is going to be looked upon with favor and given a little deer meat treat......<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRl0NHtbRWk/UQ9X5eha8fI/AAAAAAAABB0/EYufxmm-M5U/s1600/IMG_4546.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gRl0NHtbRWk/UQ9X5eha8fI/AAAAAAAABB0/EYufxmm-M5U/s320/IMG_4546.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The meat is place in the smoker and the wood chips are heated be the burner on the bottom. He uses three trays of wood chips and then the meat stays in the smoker until it is done. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-igwpFS9RwDg/UQ9YMxbuhNI/AAAAAAAABB8/V6_IAqOn4-g/s1600/IMG_4549.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-igwpFS9RwDg/UQ9YMxbuhNI/AAAAAAAABB8/V6_IAqOn4-g/s320/IMG_4549.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tomorrow he is going to smoke a pork roast to make pulled pork for lunches. mmmmm</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the brine recipes that we used</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is hubby's secret recipe:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4 C. water</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 1/2 C. Worcestershire sauce (I had to look on the bottle to spell it)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 C. soy sauce</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/4 cup Tabasco sauce</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 C. sugar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/4 C. salt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mine:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/4 C. salt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 C. brown sugar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/2 C. molasses</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2 C. water</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2 TBSP black pepper</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of coarse He still thinks his is best but he did say that mine was really good.....Me? Mine was awesome! So good, I really liked it and I was right, it was the Worcestershire that i was not liking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Guess he better get another deer this year. :o)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Blessings to all and remember, keep your eyes on the Lord, he will keep your feet from stumbling!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Looking Back - Taking Stock - Looking Forward</h2>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Wow, I can't believe it is already February 1st. Today is mine and my husbands 38th wedding anniversary. WOW.........who would have ever thought, I was only 15 1/2 and he was 16. (I think I will try to scan a picture of us then and post it) The Lord has blessed me with such a wonderful man who has worked hard all his life to provide for his family. I pray that I have been just as diligent at being a helpmeet to him.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> I was looking in on my blog that has been so neglected and then over to my picture files and I can't believe I was so slack in taking pictures and posting last year. I hope to do much better this year. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It seems as though I was under a lot of stress last year, so many things going on with so many of my family members. My mother was struggling with some health issues that took some time to resolve and my father is battling bladder cancer and he also slipped on Ice and broke his back. He is doing well now and so is my mother, but my parents are aging and going through all that comes with that. I live an hour away from them and that can be very frustrating at times when I can't be there to help as much as I would like.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Last year we learned that my brother has prostrate cancer that has spread to all his bones. He was responding to the treatment for awhile but now it is advancing. He too lives and hour away and I will be trying to go and see him every other weekend now. (my heart is sick)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">On a lighter side, the girls and I are back homeschooling this year and it is going very well. </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">I kinda fell apart and sent them back to public school half the year last year but we started out in September of 2012 homeschooling again and it has been a much better year. I feel like we have found our groove. We are still using Sonlight for our curriculum and we love it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">There was lots going on last year, we had expanded the garden and I canned and froze everything I could get my hands on. Now I'm planning this years garden and looking at seed books. Evaluating what I put up too much of and what I put up that I could have used more of. This is still very much a learning process for me. I try to do a 1 year food storage and am still learning how much of what, what did well that I want to repeat, what was over kill what didn't work so well. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Also looking into all the other stuff I stock up on because my husbands work is seasonal and is usually out of work every winter. I try to stock up and fill the freezers all summer through fall and we pretty much live off that all winter and spring. So far It has been working out ok but we have run out of a few things. This year I will have a better understanding of what we need more of. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Here are a few picture from last year, maybe my picture enthusiasm will be stronger this year.</span></span><br />

Meet Alex..........from "Where The Wild Things Are"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
what a surprise to me when I went out to the barn to feed the horses and herd a strange sound coming from one of the stalls. I did have my two goats put with a billy goat last winter/early spring and I was pretty sure that they were both going to have babies but I have no idea when they were bred so did not really know when to expect there kids............He is so dang cute!!!! He is so dang tiny!.......He was about 8in tall and 10 in long. And of course the girls and everyone else that sees him loves him....The other goat should give birth in the next few weeks as far as I can tell.</div>

Im chompping at the bit!!!<br />
I can't wait to get started. I found this website that had a list of early spring vegetables to plant....I'M READY!!! Now it's raining.........<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.waldeneffect.org/blog/Vegetables_for_early_spring/">Vegetables for early spring</a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><h2>Vegetables for early spring</h2></div><big><span style="font-style: italic;"></span></big><img align="left" alt="Basket of carrots" hspace="10" src="http://www.waldeneffect.org/20111109basketofcarrots.jpg" style="height: 410px; width: 400px;" vspace="10" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><span style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;">Even under quick hoops, you won't want to plant frost-sensitive vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers anytime soon. However, there is still a wide selection of crops to choose from for your spring garden. I've highlighted the easiest ones in the chart below.</span><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L;" /><br />
<table border="1" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="2" style="font-family: Nimbus Roman No9 L; text-align: left; width: 100%;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;">Vegetable</td><td style="font-weight: bold; vertical-align: top;">Start from:</td><td style="vertical-align: top;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Notes</span></td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Beets</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Beet seeds can sometimes be difficult to germinate. As with other root crops, beets need loose, loamy soil.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Broccoli</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Transplants</td><td style="vertical-align: top;"> The more advanced gardener can start her own seedlings either inside or in a quick hoop. Otherwise, buy sets from the local feed store when night temperatures have risen into the high 20s to low 30s Fahrenheit.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Brussels sprouts</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Transplants</td><td style="vertical-align: top;"> The more advanced gardener can start her own seedlings either inside or in a quick hoop. Otherwise, buy sets from the local feed store when night temperatures have risen into the high 20s to low 30s Fahrenheit.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Cabbage</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Transplants</td><td style="vertical-align: top;"> The more advanced gardener can start her own seedlings either inside or in a quick hoop. Otherwise, buy sets from the local feed store when night temperatures have risen into the high 20s to low 30s Fahrenheit.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Carrots</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Well-drained, loamy soil is mandatory. Carrots are slow-growers, so weed carefully to give the seedlings breathing room.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Cauliflower</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Transplants</td><td style="vertical-align: top;"> The more advanced gardener can start her own seedlings either inside or in a quick hoop. Otherwise, buy sets from the local feed store when night temperatures have risen into the high 20s to low 30s Fahrenheit.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Collards</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Spring greens are some of the easiest vegetables to grow. In addition to collards, spinach, and Swiss chard, consider trying some Asian greens for variety.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Leeks</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Leeks take a long time to grow, so I generally prefer the perennial Egyptian onions instead. As with other root crops, leeks need loose, loamy soil. </td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Lettuce</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Leaf lettuce is my earliest harvest of the year because I always plant it under quick hoops. You can cut leaves within a month of planting, but be sure to seed a second bed as soon as you start eating the first --- lettuce becomes bitter within a few weeks of first harvest.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Onions</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds, sets, or transplants.</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Getting your onions to germinate out in the cold can be a bit tricky, so you may choose to start them inside or under quick hoops to ensure they have time to grow before summer heat stunts them. Select a variety appropriate for your day length (short day in the south and long day in the north.) Many gardeners simplify planting by buying sets (tiny bulbs) from the local feed store, but onions grown from sets usually don't store well.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Parsley</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Parsley is grown very similarly to carrots, but you pick the leaves a few at a time for the next year rather than digging up the root.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Peas</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Soak your seeds overnight before planting to ensure they sprout quickly. Erect a trellis for them to grow on.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Potatoes</td><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Cut up pieces of potato, each with two eyes</td><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Hill up your potatoes by adding soil or dirt extending a few inches up the growing stem once the plant is about eight inches tall. This prevents the new tubers from being exposed to sunlight and turning green. If you're planting early into cold soil, consider cutting your seed potatoes a few weeks in advance and laying them out in a bright spot so they'll presprout.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Radish</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="background-color: yellow; vertical-align: top;">Some gardeners plant radish seeds in their carrot rows. The radishes come up quickly and mature before they compete with the slower-growing carrots.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Spinach</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">I find that spinach plants usually bolt in the spring, so I generally focus on other varieties of leafy greens.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Swiss chard</td><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="background-color: #ffff33; vertical-align: top;">Swiss chard seeds can sometimes be difficult to germinate, but otherwise Swiss chard is perhaps the easiest green to grow and will keep producing all summer.</td></tr>
<tr><td style="vertical-align: top;">Turnips</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Seeds</td><td style="vertical-align: top;">Like other root crops, turnips prefer loamy, well-drained soil.</td></tr>

<span style="font-size: large;">It's spring, and I'm outside..........working on the garden expansion, putting in blueberries,blackberries,raspberries and grapes.......also getting the garden ready for planting......spreading loads and loads of wonderful rich composted horse manure and shavings (grin) An early spring here in the mountains will have me putting in my vegetable garden 5 or 6 weeks early!!! wooohoo, it is such a struggle here with our cool temps to really get a garden off and going very early and then early fall frosts keep us from being able to grow things like watermelons or pumpkins because they freeze before they are ready.....This year it just might work. I'm going to give some pumpkins a try, the girls will love it!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Getting started back walking/jogging trying to get back on track for my fitness and weight loss goals.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Watching chickens, they are funny. Waiting on one hen to hatch a dozen eggs but she is taking longer than she should???.........should be any day....The goats are bred, I think.......we are hoping to get some kids this summer and goats milk too :o).......I made homemade buttermilk the other day from fresh goats milk and it was wonderful! I made some ranch dressing with it also and used some for baking...........Last week I took a class on making homemade mozzarella cheese at a raw milk dairy near by....I'm going to make some today.....not sure what to make with it though. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm working on my new bible study, "Stuck".....it's going good. I am seeing more and more of a pattern of how my expectations that I put onto others keeps me disappointed with them and how this is not good for me or for them or for our relationships.........learning to just love and give a whole lot more grace :o)</span></div>
